India’s Ministry of Power has set a target of generating 1,178 billion units (BU) of electricity in 2016-17, an official said.
The generation target for 2016-17 is modest 6.38% higher compared to the actual generation of 1,107 BU in 2015-16.
In 2015-16, India’s actual power generation had increased by 5.30% as compared to 1,048.672 BU generated in 2014-15.
Of the total planned generation, as much as 999 BU or 84.8% would be generated through thermal route, 40 BU through the nuclear route, 134 BU through the hydro route and a small volume of 5 BU is planned to be imported from Bhutan, the official added.
The total generation through the thermal route in 2015-16 stood at 943.407 BU, which means the target for 2016-17 through this route has been raised by 5.89%.
Of the total planned generation of 999 BU through the thermal route, coal-fired generation would account for as much 921.129 BU or 78.20% of the total planned generation of 1,178 BU and 92.21% of the planned generation through the thermal route in 2016-17, the official said.
