India’s 2013-14 coal imports at 181.34 mt
07 May 2014
May 07: Belying expectations that India’s coal import would taper off due to prevailing economic situation, India’s import of coal – coking, steam, metallurgical coke, PCI coal, anthracite coal and Petroleum coke – through 32 major and minor ports surged 18.5% to 181.34 million tons (mt) in 2013-14 from 153.01 mt imported in 2012-13, according to a compilation by ICMW based on latest data received from officials of customs and ports.
The surge in imports came mainly on account of 94% jump in import of anthracite coal, 22% increase in import of steam coal and 37% increase in import of metallurgical (met) coke.
The import of coking coal in 2013-14 increased by 9% while petroleum (pet) coke import declined by 5% over 2012-13 figures.
Of the total import of 181.34 mt in 2013-14, the share of steam coal was 136.46 mt. Coking coal import during the year stood at 35.80 mt, metallurgical coke at 2.88 mt, petroleum coke at 2.89 mt, PCI coal at 1.86 mt and anthracite coal at 1.46 mt.
In 2013-14, the import of steam coal stood at 112.29 mt, coking coal at 32.94 mt, met coke at 2.11 mt, pet coke at 3.05 mt, PCI coal at 1.86 mt and anthracite coal at 0.75 mt.
The surge in steam coal import in 2013-14 was largely on account of a steep jump in imports by power utilities, while sectors like cement too appears to have imported significant amount of coal.
According to data available with ICMW, the total import of steam coal by power utilities in 2013-14 stood at 79.35 mt, up 27% compared with 62.55 mt imported in 2012-13.
Of the total steam coal import by power utilities in 2013-14, 42.01 mt was by imported coal based power plants and 37.34 mt by other plants that use imported coal to blend with domestic coal.
In 2012-13, of the total import of 62.55 mt by power utilities, 31.64 mt was by imported coal based plants and 30.91 mt by other plants for blending with domestic coal, according to the data.
Following table provides detailed break-up of import of various types of coal and coke in 2013-14 and 2012-13:
