India’s 2014-15 coal imports up 33.5% at 242.42 mt

01 Apr 2015

April 1: A sharp 38.60% rise in the import of steam coal, largely on account of soft prices and a spurt in imports in the fourth quarter, led to a hefty 33.5% jump in India’s total imports of coal and coke through 31 ports in 2014-15 as compared to 2013-14, according to a compilation (provisional) by ICMW.

As per the compilation, based on data received from ports, shipping companies and customs officials, India’s total coal and coke imports stood at 242.42 million tons (mt) in 2014-15 as compared to 181.58 mt imported in 2013-14.

Of the total imports during the year, the import of steam coal stood at 189.50 mt, up 38.60% from 136.72 mt in 2013-14 while coking coal imports rose by 15.11% to 41.21 mt from 35.80 mt.

Imports of anthracite coal, however, fell to 0.85 mt from 1.46 mt in 2013-14 whereas PCI imports surged to 2.40 mt in 2014-15 from 1.84 mt in 2013-14.

Met coke imports during the year, according to the compilation, stood at 2.55 mt, down from 2.88 mt in 2013-14 despite a sharp fall in prices, but petroleum coke imports surged to 5.90 mt from a low of 2.89 mt.

Following table provides break-up of various types of coal and coke in 2013-14 and 2014-15 (in tons):
