India’s coal demand-despatch gap rises sharply in 2012-13

December 18: The gap between demand and despatch of coal from mining companies, including captive blocks allocated to private companies, is estimated to a have risen by a staggering 26.34% in 2012-13 compared to the figure in 2011-12, according to an estimate by the Ministry of Coal (MoC).
The gap rose to 203.073 million tons (mt) in 2012-13 against 160.731 mt in 2011-12, according to the estimates.
During the same period, production of raw coal by public sector companies Coal India Ltd (CIL) and Singareni Collieries Company Ltd (SCCL) increased by 13.14% to 509.253 mt from 450.115 mt. The production stood at 484.040 mt in 2009-10, at 485.061 mt in 2010-11 and at 490.755 mt in 2011-12.
