India’s coal imports fall for third consecutive week

January 3: India’s import of coal, including steam, coking, anthracite, PCI, pet coke and met coke, through the 20 major and minor ports is estimated to have provisionally fallen for the third consecutive week due to low imports through some of the major ports, according to a compilation by ICMW, based on monitoring of vessels’ positions and data received from shipping companies.

Imports during the week fell by 4.02% to 2.16 million tons (mt) (provisional) in the week ended January 2 compared to 2.25 mt (revised) imported in the week ended December 27.

The main reason behind the sharp fall in imports during the week was lower coal imports through the ports of Bedi, Gangavaram, Kandla, Navlakhi, New Mangalore, Okha, Porbandar and Vizag.

Of the total imports during the week ended January 2, steam coal was estimated at 1.71 mt as against 1.54 mt during the week ended December 27, while coking coal imports decreased to 359,698 tonsfrom 462,547 tons in the week ended December 27.

Imports of metallurgical coke stood decreased to 65,269 tons in the present week from 93,028 tons imported in the previous week.

There were no petroleum coke import records in the present week as against of 123,981 tons reported in the previous week.

PCI coal imports stood at 9,429 tons in the present week as against no imports in the previous week.

Anthracite coal imports decreased to 9,429 tons in the week ended January 2, from 26,651 tons in the previous week.
