India’s first half coal import bill at Rs 43,972.8 crore

 December 3: India’s coal and coke import bill during the first half (April-September) of 2015-16 is estimated at Rs 43,972.80 crore, according to data available from the commerce ministry.

 According to the same data, India’s total imports of coal and coke stood at 96.74 million tons (mt) of which 95.20 mt was coking coal and non-coking coal and the balance 1.54 mt was coke.

 The value of non-coking coal and coking coal was estimated at Rs 43,342.70 crore and that of coke was estimated at Rs 1,730.10 crore.

 According to this data, India’s coal and coke imports in H1 of 2014-15 stood at 102.42 mt of which 100.56 mt were coking coal and non-coking coal and the balance 1.86 mt comprised coke.

 The same data revealed that of the total 95.20 mt of coking and non-coking coal imported in H1 of 2015-16, 17.44 mt came from South African and 44.34 mt from Indonesia, while imports from Australia were 23.15 mt.

 In H1 of 2014-15, imports from South Africa were estimated 13.53 mt and that from Indonesia and Australia stood at 58.16 mt and 21.80 mt respectively.

 According to this government data, India’s coal imports from Indonesia were down nearly 14 mt in H1 of FY16 as compared to the same period in FY15.

 However, according to ICMW’s estimate, India’s coke and coke imports in H1 of 2015-16 stood at 111.70 mt of which 105.33 mt were coking coal (21.20 mt) and non-coking coal (84.13 mt) and the balance 6.37 mt were coke (pet coke 4.74 mt and met coke 1.63 mt).

 According to ICMW’s estimate, based on data received from RBCT, the imports from South Africa during H1 of 2015-16 was 21.72 mt and 16.01 mt in H1 of 2014-15.
