India’s imported coal stocks at 8 ports up 5% w-o-w

August 11: India's imported coal stocks at eight ports – seven major and one private – fell by 4.57% to 5.517 million tons (mt) as on August 8, 2014 against a volume of 5.276 mt on August 1, according to provisional data available with ICMW.

The overall inventories of imported coal at Indian ports during the week ended August 8 increased because of higher inventories at four major ports - New Mangalore, Mormugao, Paradip and Mumbai - on a week-on-week basis. At Kandla, coal stock levels remained the same as that in the previous week while stocks at the remaining two major ports - Kolkata and V O Chidambaranar and one private port, Mundra, depleted on a week-on-week basis.

During the week ended August 8, coal stocks at the port of Paradip increased by 15.63% to 1.746 mt against a volume of 1.510 mt recorded on August 1. Of the total coal stocks at the port during the week, steam coal stood at 0.701mt, up from 0.695 mt recorded on August 1 while coking coal increased to 1.045 mt in the week ended August 8 against a volume of 0.815 mt recorded in August 1.

At Mundra Port, imported coal stocks fell nearly 10% to 0.987 mt as on August 8, 2014 against a volume of 1.099 mt on August 1. Of the total coal stocks at the port on August 8 steam coal stood at 0.834 mt, down from 0.934 mt recorded on August 1 while coking coal in the current week stood at 0.153 mt, down from 0.165 mt recorded in the week before.

Inventories of imported coal at the port of Kolkata fell by 2.15% to 0.453 mt on August 8 against a volume of 0.463 mt recorded on August 1. On August 8, the port’s steam coal inventories stood at 0.310 mt up from 0.240 on August 1, while coking coal stocks at the port during the current week fell to 0.143 mt against a volume of 0.223 mt recorded in the previous week.
