India’s imported coal stocks at 9 ports down 2.52% w-o-w

27 Oct 2014

October 27: India's imported coal stocks at nine ports – eight major and one private – fell slightly by 2.25% to 6.764 million tons (excluding Vizag) as on October 24 against a volume of 6.939 mt (excluding Vizag) as on October 17, according to provisional data available with ICMW.

The overall inventories of imported coal at Indian ports during the week ended October 24 fell slightly after several weeks due to considerable depletion of stocks at two major ports- Mormugao and Mumbai - on a week-on-week basis along with one private port-Mundra while coal stocks at five other major ports-New Mangalore, Kandla, V O Chidambaranar and Kolkata - remained at their previous levels

Paradip is the only major port where inventories increased on a week-on week basis.

During the week ended October 24, imported coal stocks at the port of Paradip increased 1.33% to 2.576 mt against a volume of 2.542 mt recorded as on October 17 Of the total coal stocks at the port recorded during the week, steam coal’s share was at 1.405 mt and coking coal stood at 1.279 mt against a volume of 1.263 mt and 1.279 mt respectively.

After increasing for two consecutive weeks, imported coal stocks at Mundra Port dropped nearly 14% to 0.850 mt as on October 24 compared to 0.988 mt as on October 17, data revealed. During the week under review, stocks of imported steam coal at the port stood at 0.69 mt from 0.790 mt as on October 17 while coking coal stock at the port dropped sharply to 0.160 mt against a volume of 0.198 mt recorded last week.

Inventories of imported coal at the port of Kolkata as on October 24 remained at the same level from that of the previous week (ended October 17).

The coal stock position at Vizag port stood at around 1 million tons as on October 24 while stocks of the same could not be obtained for the previous week (October 17) because of the tropical cyclone. Details of the stock position of the port will be updated next week.

The following table gives break-up of port-wise imported coal stocks on a week-on-week basis (in million tons):
