September 08: India's imported coal stocks at nine ports – eight major and one private –increased by 2.73% to 6.626 million tons (mt) as on September 05, against a stock of 6.450 mt on August 29, according to provisional data available with ICMW.
The overall inventories of imported coal at Indian ports during the week ended September 05 moved up as inventories of imported coal increased at several major ports such as Mormugao, V O Chidambaranar and Kolkata and one private port –Mundra on a week-on-week basis while coal stocks at Paradip Port dropped slightly during the period.
During the week ended September 05, coal stocks at the port of Paradip fell slightly to 1.943 mt against a volume of 1.948 mt as on August 29.
Of the total coal stocks of the port during the week steam coal stocks stood at 0.745 mt, down from 0.847 mt recorded on August 29 while the coking coal stocks of the port increased to 1.198 mt against a volume of 1.101 mt in the week ended August 29.
According to an official, though traders are importing more coal, lower number of rakes supplied by the railways has slowed down the process of clearing coal stocks.
At Mundra Port, imported coal stocks increased nearly 5.21% to 0.969 mt on September 05, against a volume of 0.921 mt recorded on August 29. Of the total imported coal stocks in the port on September 05, steam coal stocks stood at 0.709 mt, down from 0.734 recorded in the previous week while coking coal stocks of the port increased to 0.260 mt during the week under review against a volume of 0.187 mt in the previous week.
Inventories of imported coal at the port of Kolkata increased almost 13% to 0.569 mt on September 05 from that of 0.505 mt as on August 29. As on September 05 the port’s steam coal inventories stood at 0.287 mt down from 0.301 as on August 29 while the coking coal stocks of the port during the current week stood at 0.282 mt, up from 0.204 mt on August 29.
