India’s imported coal stocks drop 6% w-o-w

November 17: India's imported coal stocks at nine ports – eight major and one private –fell 6.29% to 7.697 million tons (mt) as on November 14, against a volume of 8.214 mt on November 7, according to provisional data available with ICMW.

The overall inventories of imported coal at Indian ports during the week ended November 14 remained somewhat flat as coal stocks at three major ports-Kandla, V O Chidambaranar and Vizag -remained at their previous levels. Meanwhile, coal stocks at Mormugao, Kolkata and Mumbai ports recorded an increase on a week-on-week basis.

Stockpiles of imported coal at New Mangalore Port and Mundra Port recorded a significant decrease during the week under review while coal stocks at Paradip Port edged down slightly.

During the week ended November 14, imported coal stocks at the port of Paradip fell 5.09% to 2.538 mt against a volume of 2.674 mt as on November 7. Of the total coal stocks at the port recorded during the week, steam coal’s share was at 1.523 mt and coking coal’s share stood at 1.015 mt against a volume of 1.612 mt and 1.062 mt respectively as on November7.

Imported coal stocks at Mundra Port as on November 14, fell nearly 8% to 0.680 mt against a volume of 0.741 mt recorded as on November 7. The port’s steam coal stocks during the week stood at 0.575 mt, down from 0.626 mt as on November 7. During the week under review, coking coal stocks at the port stood at 0.105 mt, down from 1.523 mt as on November 14.

Inventories of imported coal at the port of Kolkata as on November 14 increased nearly 16% to 0.656 mt as on November 14, against a volume of 0.566 mt in the previous week. On November 14, the port’s steam coal stocks stood at 0.375 mt, up from 0.336 mt as on November 7 while coking coal stocks at the port increased to 0.281 mt as on November 14 from 0.230 mt on November 7.

The coal stock position at Vizag Port remained at its previous level. As on November 7, the port’s coal stocks stood at 1.200 mt
