India’s share in global coal trade up sharply
31 Oct 2014
October 31: With significant reduction in Chinese appetite, India is believed to have been the largest buyer of coal from major exporting countries in the month of September.
“According to a report, India accounted for as much as 40% of total coal exported from countries like Australia, Indonesia and South Africa,” an official from a power generation company said.
The official, however, could not provide detailed figures on the total volume of global trade that took place during the month.
He, however, said India’s share was probably higher than China’s in the month concerned as the country significantly reduced its imports of Australian coal.
According to information available with ICMW, there were no imports of South African coal by Chinese companies during the three months starting July 2014. In fact, there were no imports of South African coal by Chinese companies in May either, but imports in June were at around 170,000 tons.
