India’s trade deficit up 4.28% y-o-y in June

July 16: India’s trade deficit (merchandise) for the month of June, 2014 rose 4.28% to $11,763.24 million compared to $11,280.16 million in the same month a year ago according to an official release by the Ministry of Commerce and Industry.
On a month-on-month basis, however, India’s trade deficit for June, 2014, widened by almost 5% compared to $11,234.74 million in May 2014.
The trade deficit for the first quarter (April-June) of the current financial year (2014-15) was estimated at $33,083.93 million which was lower than the deficit of $48,326.21 million recorded during the same quarter of 2013-14.
Exports, including re-exports during the month of June, 2014 were valued at $26,479.72 million (Rs 15, 8165.21 crore) which was 10.22% higher in dollar terms (12.74% higher in rupee terms) than the level of $24,023.36 million (Rs 140,289.92 crore) during June, 2013.
The cumulative value of exports for the period April-June, 2014-15 was $80,112.30 million (Rs 478,928.90 crore) as against $73,287.72 million (Rs 40,9750.38 crore), registering a growth of 9.31% in dollar terms and growth of 16.88% in rupee terms over the same period last year.
Imports during June, 2014 were valued at $38,242.96 million (Rs.228,427.88 crore), representing a growth of 8.33% in dollar terms and growth of 10.80% in rupee terms over the level of imports valued at $35303.52 million (Rs 206,163.02 crore) in June, 2013.
The cumulative value of imports for the period April-June, 2014-15 was $113196.23 million (Rs 676,694.53 crore) as against $121,613.93 million (Rs 678,294.38 crore), registering a negative growth of 6.92% in dollar terms and negative growth of 0.24% in rupee terms over the same period last year.
