India wanting more coal, China wanting less

China's coal imports fell sharply in the first six months of the year on a faltering economy and as the government rejected shipments due to new quality restrictions. The Australian Financial Review cites China Customs Bureau data saying that demand was down 37.5% (to 99.9mT) but does not specify the relative portions of thermal and coking coal.
The fall comes on the back of an 8% fall in coal consumption in the country over the first five months, The AFR says.
Meanwhile, the Economic Times says India's thermal coal imports rose 23% (to 24mT) at 12 of its major ports in the first quarter, even though the government is trying to lift the portion of domestically produced thermal coal in its energy mix.
