Indian Railways’ commodity wise revenue up 7.05% in Apr-May

June 18: The Indian Railways have generated Rs 16405.26 crore of revenue earnings from commodity-wise freight traffic during April-May 2014 as compared to Rs 15324.25 crore during the corresponding period last year, registering an increase of 7.05%.
An official release said, the Railways carried 180.63 million tons (mt) of commodity-wise freight traffic during April-May 2014 as compared to 171.84 mt carried during the corresponding period last year, registering an increase of 5.12%.
Out of the total earnings of Rs 8334.09 crore from commodity-wise freight traffic during the month of May 2014, as much as Rs 3601.27 crore came from transportation of 43.96 mt of coal, followed by Rs 720.10 crore from 10.42 mt of iron ore for exports, steel plants and for other domestic user.
The release said that Rs 818.47 crore came from 10.22 mt of cement, Rs 765.15 crore from 4.89 mt of foodgrains, Rs 499.27 crore from 3.80 mt of petroleum oil and lubricant (POL), Rs 513.88 crore from 3.30 mt of Pig iron and finished steel from steel plants and other points, Rs 355.83 crore from 3.37 mt of fertilizers, Rs 111.66 crore from 1.20 mt of raw material for steel plants, except iron ore, Rs 378.88 crore from 4.19 mt by container service and Rs 569.58 crore from 6.48 mt of other goods.
