Indian cement sector consumes 27.25 mt of coal in 2012-13

September 19: The Indian cement sector had consumed a total of 27.25 million tons (mt) of coal during 2012-13, down 3.3% from 37.59 mt received in 2011-12, according to a compilation by ICMW based on data received from various sources.
During the year, a total of 18.47 mt of coal was consumed during the process of cement making while 0.08 mt pet coke was used for the same purpose. On the other hand, 8.71 mt of coal was used for generation of power at the captive power plants for cement making.
However, during 2011-12, 19.33 mt coal was used along with 0.01 mt of lignite and 0.36 mt of pet coke whereas 8.48 mt of coal was used at the captive power plants.
