Indian ports capacity to touch 3,130 mt by 2019-20
28 Nov 2014
November 28: Combined capacities of the 12 major ports in India are likely to reach 3,130 million tons (mt) by 2019-20, according to the Maritime Agenda 2010-2020, said an official release from the Ministry of Shipping.
“This plan [Maritime Agenda (2010-2020)] has estimated the traffic projections and capacity additions at the ports up to the year 2020. Based on the estimated growth, it has projected capacity of 3,130 million tons by 2019-20,” the release said.
The release said the government has taken several measures to enhance capacity of the ports which include up to 100% FDI under the automatic route for port development projects, income-tax incentives as per Income Tax Act, 1961, standardisation of bidding documents like the RFQ, RFP and concession agreement, enhanced delegation of financial powers to the Ministry of Shipping to accord investment approval for PPP projects, streamlining of security clearance procedures and close monitoring of developmental projects at major ports.
According to the release, at present, Kandla Port has the maximum number of PPP projects under operation (7 projects worth Rs 1,650.52 crore), followed by Paradip Port (6 projects worth Rs 648.62 crore) and Kolkata (4 projects worth 297 crore).
