Indian power cos’ 2015-16 coal consumption up 2.67%

Coal consumption by India’s power utilities monitored by the Central Electricity Authority (CEA) in 2015-16 stood at 545.674 million tons (mt), up 2.67% compared to 531.477 mt consumed in 2014-15, according to provisional data available with ICMW.
In March, the last month of 2015-16, coal consumption by power plants stood at 47.547 mt, up 8.58% compared to 43.788 mt consumed in the same month of 2014-15, the data revealed.
The consumption in March this year was up 6.15% compared with 44.79 mt consumed in February.
ICMW had reported on March 28 that Indian power plants’ coal consumption in 2015-16 would range around 545 mt.
Meanwhile, the specific coal consumption by the power sector during financial year 2015-16 came down to 0.645 Kg/KWH from a high of 0.671 Kg/KWH in 2014-15.
The specific coal consumption in March 2016, however, increased to 0.696 Kg/KWH from a low of 0.625 Kg/KWH in March 2015.
