28 Apr 2016
The total coal receipts, both indigenous and domestic, by Indian power utilities in 2015-16 increased by 3.54%, mainly on account of an impressive 6.6% increase in domestic supplies that led to a sharp 11.58% decline in imported coal usages, according to provisional data of Central Electricity Authority (CEA).
The total coal receipts during the year stood at 561.664 million tons (mt), up 3.54% as compared to 542.446 mt in 2014-15.
Of the total, the receipt of indigenous coal was 480.948 mt, up 6.6% compared to 451.158 mt received in 2014-15 whereas imported coal receipts declined by 11.58% to 80.716 mt from 91.288 mt.
Higher availability of domestic coal prompted many power utilities to reduce their intake or purchase of imported coal, industry sources said.
Meanwhile, the total coal receipts by Indian power utilities in March 2016 stood at 50.366 mt, which was 8.83% higher compared to the February receipt of 46.28 mt, but down marginally from 50.589 mt received in March 2015.
Of the total receipts in March 2016, 44.472 mt (40.22 mt in February 2016 and 43.152 tons in March 2015) comprised indigenous coal and 5.894 mt (6.06 mt in February 2016
and 7.437 mt in March 2015) was imported coal.
