Indian power cos’ coal imports up 14.37% in 2014

January 13: Imports of steam coal by the Indian power utilities moved up 14.37% to 88.206 million tons (mt) during January-December, 2014 as compared to imports which stood lower at 77.124 tons during 2013 (January-December), as per provisional data of the Central Electricity Authority (CEA) available with ICMW.
This year-on-year rise in imports is mainly attributed to higher imports by imported coal-based plants, the data revealed.
During 2014, the imported coal-based power plants brought in 42.999 mt of steam coal while during the previous year, their imports stood at 38.69 mt.
On the other hand, imports by domestic coal-based power plants, which use imported coal for blending, touched 45.207 mt while during 2013, the figure stood at 38.434 mt, data revealed.
