Indian power plants’ FY16 coal imports dip 11.6%

21 Apr 2016

India’s power utilities’ coal imports in 2015-16 declined by 11.6% to 80.72 million tons (mt) compared to 91.29 mt imported in 2014-15, triggered by a 24% dip in imports by domestic coal-based plants, according to provisional data from CEA available with ICMW.

The imports of coal by coastal areas’ imported coal-based plants, however, remained almost unchanged during the year, the data revealed.

Of the total imports of 80.72 mt during the year, 37.21 mt was by plants that used blend of imported and domestic coal, down 24% compared to 48.97 mt imported by these plants in 2014-15.

However, imports by coast-based plants increased by 0.42% to 43.50 mt as compared to 42.32 mt imported in the previous financial year.

It is pertinent to note that total imports by non-coastal plants that use imported coal for blending purpose was nearly 11.40% lower than the revised lower target of 42 mt.

The total imports in March 2016, the last month of 2015-16, stood at 5.89 mt, down marginally from 6.06 mt imported in February and 6.82 mt imported in January and also down from 7.30 mt imported in March 2015.

The decline in imports was triggered by higher availability of domestic coal and lower-than-expected growth in demand for electricity from distribution companies (discoms) due to their poor financial condition.

In fact, earlier, in view of the increased availability of domestic coal, the CEA had reduced the coal import target for all utilities to 84 mt for 2015-16 from the earlier set target of 115 mt. It may be recalled that the coal import target for the utilities in 2014-15 had stood at 96 mt and actual imports were 91.29 mt.

Following chart provides the monthly break-up of coal imports by utilities in 2015-16 and 2014-15 (in mt):
