Indian power plants’ coal consumption rises 4% y-o-y

Coal consumption by India’s power utilities in May 2016 stood at 48.42 million tons (mt) against 49.65 mt in April 2016, showing a month-on-month dip of 2.47%, as per provisional data available from the Central Electricity Authority (CEA).
On a year-on-year basis, coal consumption by the power plants in May 2016 were up 4.08% compared to 46.52 mt seen in May 2016.
For the first 2 months of the current fiscal of 2015-16, coal consumption by the power utilities stood at 98.20 mt, up 10.30% compared to 89.02 mt seen in the same period of the previous fiscal of 2015-16.
Coal consumption by India’s power utilities monitored by the CEA in 2015-16 stood at 545.674 million tons (mt), up 2.67% compared to 531.477 mt consumed in 2014-15.
Meanwhile, the specific coal consumption in May 2016 dropped 4.62% month-on-month to 0.62 Kg/KWH against 0.65 Kg/KWH in April 2016 while year-on-year it also dipped 3.12% to 0.64 Kg/KWH in May 2015. In the first two months of the current fiscal the specific coal consumption also dipped 3.0% to 0.62 Kg/KWH against 0.64 Kg/KWH in the same two months in 2015-16.
The specific coal consumption by the power sector during financial year 2015-16 came down to 0.645 Kg/KWH from a high of 0.671 Kg/KWH in 2014-15.
