Indian power sector’s June capacity addition at 978.67 MW
18 Jul 2014
July 18: India’s imports of coal, including non-coking, coking, anthracite, PCI, pet coke and met coke, through the 21 major and minor ports, declined sharply during the week ending July 17 compared to the previous week, according to a compilation by ICMW, based on monitoring of vessels’ positions and data received from shipping companies.
Imports during the week decreased 21.10% to 2.66 million tons (mt) (provisional) compared to 3.37 mt (revised) imported in the week ended July 10.
The provisional figure during the week ended July 10 was 3 mt.
The main reason behind the decrease in imports during the week was lower imports through some of the ports as majority of consumers of imported coal have already almost entirely stocked their requirement for consumption during the monsoon.
Whatever cargo coming in at present is mainly booked as bargain buying as prices had softened since the beginning of June, market sources said.
Of the total imports during the week ended July 17, non-coking coal was estimated at 2.26 mt as against 2.79 mt recorded during the week ended July 10, while coking coal imports stood at 262,342 tons, a decrease from 478,400 tons reported in the previous week.
There were no metallurgical coke imports recorded during the week as against 66,719 mt imported for the week ended July 10.
Petroleum coke imports were recorded at 96,069 mt for the week ended July 17, while there were no imports of the material in the previous week.
No PCI coal imports were recorded during the week as well as in the previous week.
On the other hand, anthracite coal imports were recorded at 33,600 mt for the week ended July 17, a decrease from 36,530 mt recorded for the week ended July 10.
The following table gives port-wise imports of coal in the week ended July 17 compared to the week ended July 10 (in tons):
