Indian power sector’s capacity addition at 700 MW in Jan

February 26: India’s power generation capacity addition in January 2014 stood at 700 MW against 1,765 MW recorded during the previous month, according to provisional data of the Central Electricity Authority (CEA).
With this, the total installed generation capacity of the country stood at 234,601.94 MW as on January 31, 2014 while the same was at 233,929.94 MW during the last day of the previous month, revealed the data.
In January 2014, the capacity-addition target was 910 MW for the thermal sector against which the achievement was 700 MW while for the hydro sector the target stood at 68.67 MW against which achievement stood at nil. Target and achievement for the nuclear sector both stood at nil, as per CEA data.
During the month of January, thermal power capacity addition took place only at Rajpura TPP, U-1 (700 MW) in Punjab by Nabha Power Development Limited.
However, during the month of December, thermal power capacity addition took place at Niwari TPP, U-1 (45 MW) in Maharashtra, by BLA Pvt Ltd; Sasan TPP, U#2 (660 MW) in Madhya Pradesh, by Reliance Power; Kawai TPPS St-II, U# 2 (660 MW) in Bihar, by Adani Power; Satpura TPS Extn. U-11 by MPPGCL (250MW); and Tuticorin Indbarath TPP U-2 (150 MW) by Indbarath Ltd.
On the other hand, hydro power capacity was added in December at Nimmo Bazgo HE Project U-1 (15 MW) in Jammu & Kashmir by NHPC and Uri-II, HE , U-2 (60 MW) in Jammu & Kashmir by NHPC.

*As reported by CEA, the capacity for 2011-12 was increased by it to 20,501.70 MW instead of 18,814.50 MW.
# CEA had earlier reported that capacity addition in May (2012-13) was 1,070 MW, but it appears that the figures have been revised to 1,130 MW.
## As per the consolidated data provided by CEA, total capacity added during April-March, 2013 stood at 20,622.80 MW although individual month’s capacity addition figure shows the total April-March figure to be 20,562.8 MW.
