April 17: The Indian power utilities, both imported coal-based and indigenous coal-based, have been asked by the Central Electricity Authority (CEA) to raise their coal import target for the year 2015-16 by 22.34% to 115 million tons (mt) from 94 mt in 2014-15.
A senior official from CEA told ICMW that of the total 115 mt target for 2015-16, the indigenous coal-based plants will be required to import 73 mt, and the balance 42 mt by imported coal-based plants.
The utility-wise break-up is not available for imported coal-based plants, but it has been found that the Kawai plant, which was last year classified under imported coal-based, has been classified under indigenous coal-based in 2015-16.
In 2014-15, the coal import target by indigenous coal-based plants was
54 mt, while that for imported coal-based plants was 42 mt.
Actual imports by power utilities in 2014-15 were 91.15 mt of which 48.15 mt was by indigenous coal-based plants and 43 mt by imported coal-based plants.
