Indian power units’ Feb coal imports drop 11% m-o-m

28 Mar 2016

(Corrigendum: It may be noted that ICMW had carried a story on March 14, 2016, where it had erroneously mentioned that “imports of steam coal by Indian power utilities in February were down marginally to 6.7 million tons (mt) compared to 6.8 mt imported in January”.)

Indian power utilities’ coal imports in February 2016 stood at 6.06 million tons (mt), down 11.14% month-on-month compared to 6.82 million tons (mt) in January 2016, according to provisional data from CEA available with ICMW.

However, on a year-on-year basis, the imports in February this year were down 1.30% from 6.14 mt (revised) imported in the same month in 2015, according to the data.

The power utilities’ total coal imports during the first 11 months (April-February) of 2015-16 declined by 10.37% to 74.72 mt from 83.37 mt seen during the same period in 2014-15.

Of the total imports during the first 11 months of 2015-16, 40.38 mt were imported by utilities that bring in overseas coal for blending purposes. The imports by these plants stood at 83.37 mt during the same period of 2014-15, as already mentioned above.

The import trend over the last few months show clear month-on-month and year-on-year volumes decline on account of higher availability of domestic coal and lower-than-expected growth in demand for electricity from distribution companies (discoms) due to their poor financial condition.

In fact, earlier, in view of the increased availability of domestic coal, the CEA had reduced the coal import target for all utilities to 84 mt for 2015-16 from the previous 115 mt. It may be recalled that the coal import target for the utilities in 2014-15 had stood at 96 mt.

Following chart provides the monthly break-up of coal imports by utilities in 2015-16 and 2014-15 (in mt):
