November 19: The import of steam coal by Indian power utilities, both imported coal-based and domestic coal-based plants, in October 2013 moved up 8.12% to 6.821 mt as compared to 6.309 mt imported in September 2013, according to provisional data compiled by the Central Electricity Authority (CEA) and available to ICMW.
The imports in October 2013 were also up more than 30.39% from 5.231 mt imported in the same month in the previous fiscal.
Of the total imports in October this year, imports by domestic coal-based plants that are required to blend up to 15% of their total requirement with imported coal stood at 3.151 mt, which was 75.62% of the total target of 4.167 mt.
These plants had imported 3.048 mt of coal in September 2013 and only 2.576 mt coal in October 2012.
The imported coal-based plants, mainly located in coastal areas, had brought in 3.67 mt of coal in October, which was 138% of the target of 2.667 mt for the month.
These plants had brought in 3.261 mt of imported coal in September 2013 and 2.655 mt in October 2012.
During the first seven months (April-October) of 2013-14, coal imports by utilities increased by 60.96% to 50.064 million tons (mt) from 31.104 mt during the corresponding period of 2012-13, according to the data.
