International freight rates continue uptrend in April

International freight rates continued with their upward movement in April as the freight market started to look positive after a prolonged downtrend.
Freight rates (panamax) for Richards Bay Coal Terminal (RBCT) in South Africa to India’s west coast increased to $7.10 per ton on April 25 from $6.20 per ton on March 31 and $5.60 per ton on February 29. The freight for RBCT to India’s east coast was also up to $7.20 per ton on April 25 from $6.40 per ton on March 31 and $6.00 per ton on February 29.
Freight rates for the Indonesia-to-India route also showed an increasing trend. For Indonesia to India’s west coast, freight rates rose to $5.00 per ton on April 25 from $4.70 per ton on March 31 and from $4.30 per ton on February 29. The rate for the east coast increased to $4.30 per ton on April 25 from $4.00 per ton on March 31 and $3.65 per ton on February 29.
The freight rate for Australia to India (Hay Point) was quoted at $7.10 per ton on April 25, up from $6.55 per ton on March 31 and $6.00 per ton on February 29.
