JSW Cement Limited on January 6 announced the commencement of construction of its greenfield 2.4 mtpa cement plant at Salboni in West Bengal. The project would be spread over 134 acres of land and would entail an investment of around Rs 800 crore.
The cement plant will boost JSW’s capacity to produce Portland slag cement and ground granulated blast furnace slag cement.
The company plans to expand the plant to 4.8 mtpa in due course. Production of the 2.4 mtpa will start within the next 12 months. Plans are also afoot to import clinker from
Thailand and Vietnam for the cement plant.
JSW Cement currently has capacity to produce 6 mtpa and plans to take this to 16 mtpa in the next 24 months.
“We have given orders for 8 grinding units and identified sites at Salboni, Salem, Jajpur and Vijayanagar,” said Parth Jindal, son of Sajjan Jindal, and who is likely to head the company’s cement unit.
To increase the capacity from 2.4 mtpa to 4.8 mtpa would require an additional investment of around Rs 700 crore. Taking up cement capacity to 16 mtpa would need an investment of Rs 2,000 crore.
