Jan steam coal imports via Kolkata Port plunge 93% m-o-m

February 12: Steam coal import volumes through the port of Kolkata dropped almost 93% to 4,266 tons in January 2014 against 60,326 tons reported in December 2013, as per provisional data available with ICMW.
With this, steam coal imports via Kolkata during the first 10 months of 2013-14 stood at 1,728,475 tons against 1,603,631 tons registered in the same period last fiscal, showing a year-on-year increase of 7.78% over the 10-month period.
Imports of the commodity in January 2013 were at a whopping 221,799 tons. Total imports in 2012-13 amounted to 1,696,998 tons.

In January 2014, the entire volume arrived from South Africa in a price band of Rs 5,733 - Rs 6,062 ($92-$97) per ton.
In December, however, 54,702 tons were imported from Indonesia at a unit price of Rs 5,499 ($88) while the balance 5,624 tons arrived from South Africa in a price band of Rs 6,161 - Rs 5,679 ($99-$91) per ton.
