January power capacity addition almost trebles m-o-m

February 17: India’s power capacity addition in January 2015 stood at 2,020 MW, up almost thrice from 668.67 MW recorded during the previous month, according to provisional data made available by the Central Electricity Authority (CEA).
With this, the total installed generation capacity of the country stood at 258,701.46 MW as on January 31, 2014 while the same was at 255,681.46 MW during the last day of the previous month, the data revealed.
During January 2015, the capacity-addition target was 2,360 MW for the thermal sector while the achievement fell short of the target to 2,020 MW. However, for the hydro and nuclear sectors, both targets and achievements stood at nil, as per the CEA data.
Meanwhile, in December 2014, the capacity-addition target was 1,460 MW for the thermal sector while the achievement fell short of the target at 600 MW. However, for the hydro sector, the target stood at 25 MW while achievement was at 68.67 MW while for nuclear sector, both target and achievement stood at nil.
India added a total of 13,630.41 MW of power generation capacity during the first 10 months (April-January) of 2014-15, registering a growth of about 45% over 9,428 MW added during the corresponding period of the previous financial year, as per data.

In January 2015, in the thermal sector, 600 MW was added at Tamnar TPP, U-3, in Chhattisgarh, commissioned by Jindal Power, 300 MW was added at Haldia TPP, unit-1 commissioned by Coastal Energen, 600 MW at Derang TPP, U-2, in Odisha commissioned by JIP Ltd, 250 MW at Neyveli TPS, U-2 in Tamil Nadu commissioned by NLC and 270 MW at Amravati TPP, U-3 in Maharashtra, commissioned by India Bulls Power Ltd.
However, during December 2014, in the thermal sector, 600 MW was added at Mutiara, TPP Unit-I by Coastal Energen while in the hydro sector, 68.67 MW was added at Rampur, HEP, Unit-VI by SJVNL.
