September 28: The ambitious 10-million tons Jayant expansion project of Northern Coalfields (NCL) has been referred to the empowered sub-committee and has not been taken up at the recent board meeting of Coal India (CIL), a top official said.
“The Jayant expansion project has been referred to the empowered sub-committee. So it will not be taken up at the board meeting now,” CIL Chairman-cum-Managing Director Sutirtha Bhattacharya told ICMW on September 23.
The CIL board met on September 23.
Meanwhile, NCL has been awaiting sanctions from CIL for the 10-mt Jayant expansion project which was scheduled to start production as early as the next financial year.
“We are still awaiting sanctions from the CIL board. Once it is obtained, the expansion project will be implemented,” a company source said in August.
Currently, the Jayant OC project is producing 13-14 mt. As per CIL’s roadmap for Vision 2020, Jayant is expected to start production from 2016-17 and contribute 6 mt by 2019-20.
