JoyGlobal India ops to sustain focus on coal

November 27: Globally, mining equipment major JoyGlobal may be moving away from dirty coal, but its India operations will continue to tap this commodity space in a big way, an official from the company informed ICMW.
“India has high reserves of coal and no, this strategy will not be applied to India. Because, no matter what this country cannot do without coal which will remain the main source of energy for a long time in the future,” the official observed.
India, at present, forms, a very small part of JoyGlobal’s operations, contributing less than 1% to the global kitty and hence, the Indian scenario does not affect the parent company too much.
“But we must remember that JoyGlobal manufactures coal mining equipment. And, if there are lesser opportunities to sell these in the US, then we must look for other markets to do so and India would be a very good option, where coal mining is still prevalent. So, the share of revenues from the Indian operations can only increase in the future,” the official said, adding: “Thus, we feel that our market in India will improve in the days to come.”
The primary coal equipment needed in India are geared towards surface mining since this category comprises 90% of the mining topography in this country unlike in China, where underground mining commands 60% share.
