June coal imports up 1.6% on year to 2.41 million tons

Thailand imported 2.41 million mt of coal in June, edging up 1.6% from the same month last year, according to customs data released Monday.
Of the total, 770,127 mt was bituminous coal, down 7.2% year on year. Australia supplied 278,000 mt, down 6.6% year on year while Indonesia supplied 265,499 mt, down 44.5% from June 2017. The US accounted for 225,446 mt, jumping from just 19 mt in the same month last year.
Imports of other coals like lignite and sub-bituminous, however, rose 6.7% year on year to 1.629 million mt in June, with Indonesia accounting for 1.626 million mt, up 32.6% last year.
Thailand imported 11,047 mt of anthracite coal in the month, down 29.8% year on year.
In the first half to June, Thailand imported 12.27 million mt of coal, up 6.4% year on year, comprising mainly bituminous coal -- 3.86 million mt, down 30.4% year on year. Other coals accounted for 8.33 million mt, up 41.3% from the same period in 2017. Indonesia and Australia remained key suppliers.
