Imports of steam coal by power utility Karnataka Power Corporation Limited (KPCL) in March 2016 increased by 15.12% to 99,000 tons against 86,000 tons in February 2016, according to provisional data available with ICMW.
The imports in March 2016 were a whopping 119% of the target of 83,000 tons set for the month.
However, imports of steam coal by KPCL during the full fiscal of 2015-16 stood at only 543,000 tons, down 44% compared to 969,000 tons imported during 2014-15.
The import target for the utility for 2015-16 was 1,000,000 tons (1 mt), which means the materialisation for the period was 54%.
The original import target for the year was 2 mt, but it was revised to 1 mt in July following increased availability of domestic coal.
