Kandla Port planning to increase draft level from April

March 23: Kandla Port is likely to initiate the process of increasing its draft from the month of April as part of its initiatives to enable berthing of capsize vessels at the port, a senior port official told ICMW over phone.

“It will be done on a PPP basis and we have already awarded the project to a private company and which is likely to start work from next month onwards,” the official said.
He, however, declined to comment on the estimated deadline of the project.

He said that the port aims to increase its draft to 14.5 metres to berth capsize vessels from the current 12.5 metres. But the contract with the private company is to increase till 13 metres as of now. “We have been handling capsize vessels with floating cranes but we need to increase the draft to 14.5 metres so that we can normally berth capesize vessels,” he added.
