Kenya Scales Up Search for Coal Deposits in Kwale and Kilifi

The Kenya government has scaled up search for coal in the Coastal counties of Kwale, Taita Taveta and Kilifi.
Mining Cabinet Secretary Najib Balala on Thursday said the state is identifying coal basins in the entire region.
"We have drilled seven areas for testing and the eighth region will be completed in a matter of weeks. We need to establish how much coal is in here," said Balala.
He was speaking during site visit in Taru basin believed to have large coal quantities.
The basin, which runs across Kwale and Kilifi counties, is also believed to have large deposits of rare minerals such as gypsum, Titanium and Zircon and gas reserves.
"We have been encouraged by the results from the seven wells in Taru basin," Balala sai.
He said his ministry bought two modern drilling machines for the exploration at Sh100 million.
