Layoffs possible at Walter Energy coal mine in Brookwood

Walter Energy is preparing for the possibility of layoffs.

A total of 370 employees have been issued WARN notices, according to Walter Energy spokesman Bill Stanhouse.

The notices impact employees at the Jim Walter mining Operations near Brookwood, including the No. 7 mine, the No. 5 mine preparation plant and the Central Shop.

In the next 60 days, all, some or none of the people issued notices could be laid off "if market conditions do not improve."

Stanhouse said it was a market-based decision, noting low coal prices and a challenging market.

Additional layoffs could be possible from Central Supply and Central Mining Office, Stanhouse said.
