Liaoning to ban sale of high-sulfur commercial coal

Liaoning, a coal-rich province in northeast China, has announced to ban the use of commercial coal with sulfur above 2%, in an effort to improve air quality, said a statement jointly released by six provincial departments on September 9.
Meanwhile, lignite coal with transport distance more than 600km and calorific value below 3,900 Kcal/kg will also be banned for use and sale in the province, the statement said.
For the so-called “San Coal” used mainly for residential purpose, the province will ban the use of coal with ash 16% or higher, calorific value below 4,000 Kcal/kg and sulfur above 1%.
The statement required related firms to strictly implement the new rule and provide quality inspection report for every batch of commercial coal with required details included.
China has tightened control over the use of high-sulfur and low-calorific coals, as it struggles with growing air pollution issues and an excess of coal supply in the domestic market as the sector slumped to a multi-year low.
