Live storage in important reservoirs of India slightly higher as on June 26

June 30: The live storage available in 85 important reservoirs of India as on June 26, 2014 was 38.022 billion cubic meter (BCM), which 102% of the storage of corresponding period of last year and 131% of the storage of average of last ten years, an official release said.
The live storage as on June 26 was, however, only 25% of the total lcapacity of these reservoirs, the release added.
The Central Water Commission monitors live storage status of 85 important reservoirs of the country on weekly basis.
These reservoirs include 37 reservoirs having hydropower benefit with installed capacity of more than 60 MW. The total live storage of these reservoirs is 155.046 BCM which is about 61% of the live storage capacity of 253.388 BCM which is estimated to have been created in the country.
The release said of the total live storage, 7.45 BCM was with six reservoirs in the northern region states of Himachal Pradesh, Punjab and Rajasthan, which was 41% of the total storage capacity of 18.01 BCM of these reservoirs. The live storage in these six reservoirs during the corresponding period of of 2013 was 40%.
The storage available in 15 reservoirs in eastern region states of Jharkhand, Odisha, West Bengal and Tripura was 4.77 BCM, which was 25% of the total live storage capacity of 18.83 BCM of these reservoirs. The storage during the correspoidng period of last year was 22%
So far as 22 reservoirs in western region states of Gujarat and Maharashtra was concerned, the live storage as on June 26 was 5.88 BCM which was 24% of the total capacity of 24.54 BCM. The storage during corresponding period of last year was 29%, which means the storage this year was less than last year.
In central region states of Uttar Pradesh, Uttarakhand, Madhya Pradesh and Chhattisgarh, the live storage in 12 reservoirs as on June 26 was 13.16 BCM which was 31% of the total capacity of 42.30 BCM. The storage during the corresponding period of last year was 25%.
In the 30 reservoirs in southern states of Andhra Pradesh, Karnataka, Kerala and Tamil Nadu, the live storage was 6.76 BCK, which was 13% of the total live storage capacity of 51.37 BCM of these reservoirs. The storage during the corresponding period of last year was 16%.
The release said the states having better storage than last year for corresponding period were Punjab, Rajasthan, Odisha, Uttar Pradesh, Madhya Pradesh, Chhattisgarh and Tamil Nadu, while the state of Andhra Pradesh was having equal storage to last year.
However, the states such as Himachal Pradesh, Jharkhand, West Bengal, Tripura, Gujarat, Maharashtra, Uttarakhand, Karnataka and Kerala were having lesser storage than last year for corresponding period.
