Lower grade SA coal prices firm up
06 Nov 2013
November 6: With an increasing number of consumers, including Indian, looking to buy low grade South African material (5,500 Kcal/kg NAR), the interest is gradually shifting from standard material (6,300 Kcal/kg NAR), leading to a firm trend in the former and a flat trend in the latter segment, industry sources said.
"Prospect of availability of less cargo of 5,500 Kcal/kg material in the coming days due to limited capacity of miners, coupled with a firming domestic price in China is affecting price movement," they said.
In recent days, Indian cement makers are practically off the market while other sector consumers are looking at 5,500 Kcal/kg material rather than standard South African cargo, they added.
The shift in interest led to firmness in prices of Indonesian 5,900 Kcal/kg GAR material as well, they added.
Another shot in arm for SA material came when CIL, on November 5, said it is looking to import 5,500 Kcal/kg material of any origin in the next financial year, an industry expect said.

ICMW corrects:
There is a correction in yesterday's (November 5) story titled "CIL looking to import 5,500 Kcal/kg GAR coal in FY'15". The correct headline and subsequent reporting in the story should be read as 5,500 Kcal/kg NAR and not GAR. Rest of the story remains unchanged.
The story is repeated today (November 6) with correction and one added para (Para 3)
