MRPL may stop production of pet coke: NMPT
22 Apr 2015
April 22: Mangalore Refinery and Petrochemicals Limited (MRPL) might stop production of pet coke due to environmental issues, a senior port official of New Mangalore Port, through which MRPL exported pet coke to coastal cement companies, told ICMW over phone.
MRPL officials, however, could not be contacted to confirm the same.
Recently the Karnataka State Pollution Control Board (KSPCB) has recommended action against Mangalore Refinery and Petrochemicals Limited (MRPL) for not complying with various air pollution control norms for phase III unit of pet coke plant, said media reports.
According to reports, KSPCB had sought an answer from MRPL as to “why the office shall not recommend issuing an order to close pet coke silos and storage yard located adjacent to a residential area and initiate further action as per the provisions of the act.”
MRPL director (refinery) Vijay G Joshi, in his reply to the KSPCB show cause notices, said that the coke handling plant is not contributing to noise or dust emissions, media reports added.
