MRPL pet coke output falls short of targeted capacity

21 Jul 2014

July 21: MRPL Ltd, a subsidiary of ONGC Ltd, which started its coker recently at Mangalore, is believed to be producing levels that are much lower than its planned capacity due to various reasons, an industry source claimed.

MRPL, which had planned to produce 15,000-18,000 tons of pet coke on a monthly basis, is believed to be manufacturing only 10,000-12,000 tons of the material.

“MRPL, it seems, is producing 10,000-12,000 tons of pet coke per month. It also has export obligations and, as such, is refining more to produce petrol and diesel, but there also appears to be a problem with the quality of its pet coke,” the source said.

“MRPL appears to have not yet installed crushers and as such the pet coke which is finally coming out is in the size of big lumps,” the source said.

“Who will buy lumpy material from MRPL as it damages the body of trucks during loading,” the source observed.

All refineries generally install crushers because it is a system under which pet coke goes from the drum to the crusher and after crushing it goes to the yard or silos for loading.

“It appears that MRPL has not yet installed the crusher or may be it is not yet ready,” the source said. MRPL could not be contacted by ICMW for its comments.
