Mafia hoarding pilfered coal in Giridih jungles

10 Mar 2014

The mafia in nexus with Maoists are using jungles of Dumri to Nimiaghat area in Giridih district and Topchanchi in Dhanbad as safe haven for hoarding the coal.

The coal transported from Bermo coalmines of Central Coalfields Limited (CCL) by trucks are the preferred target of the coal mafioso operation.

The large scale network of pilferage of coal came to fore recently when a coal laden truck that was on way to the Maithon Power Limited (MPL) was spotted unloading coal at Naglo jungles at Bermo-Dumri road under the jurisdiction of Nimiaghat police station.

Interestingly, police officers of the Nimiaghat on being asked pleaded ignorance over the entire issue.

Office-in-charge of the Nimiaghat PS Rukshar Ahmed while talking to HT said he was not aware of any such unloading and stocking of pilfered coal within his jurisdiction.

However, pictures taken by HT suggest that a large network of coal mafias is operative in the area. Illegal coal dumps can be witnessed at Kumaihnidih, Naglo, Bharkhar, Sankardih , Borwapani  besides other locations.

Moving on the GT road between Shankardih to Madhupur in Giridih district one can identify more than ten locations where coal from trucks are unloaded and then transported to safe locations. The Nimiaghat Police station in-charge Rukshar Ahmed however expressed ignorance on the issue. According to available report mafia gangs operated by Mahtos, Khans and Thakurs besides others are operating the illegal dumps. The jungle turf of this trade is being controlled by the Maoists who provide protection to illegal coal traders in lieu of heavy cuts (money offered).
