Major ports’ Apr-Dec cargo traffic handling up 3%

The cargo traffic handling at India’s 12 major ports stood at 447.05 million tons (mt) during the first nine months (April-December) of 2015-16, up 3.21% as compared to 433.5 mt handled during the same period of the previous year, official data revealed.
On a quarter-on-quarter basis, the growth in cargo handling was 4.3% in Q1, 3.8% in Q2 and 1.4% in Q3.
Mormugao Port recorded the highest growth in cargo traffic at 35.3% during the first nine months of the year, whereas Chidambaranar Port stood second with a growth of 19.3%. The Haldia Dock Complex of Kolkata Port Trust recorded a traffic growth of 13.8% whereas the Kolkata Dock System of the same port recorded a growth of 12.5%.
The growth registered by Kandla Port was 4.3%, Cochin Port had a growth of 3.1%, Kamarajar Port witnessed a growth of 1.5% in cargo handling, while Mumbai Port and JNPT’s growth in cargo handling was only 0.5% and 0.3% respectively.
