Majority of NTPC coal-fired plants operated at over 85% capacity

August 19: As many as 10 of the total 16 coal-fired power plants of NTPC Ltd operated at over 85% capacity utilisation during the first quarter of 2014-15, according to data available with ICMW.

However, almost all the seven plants based on gas or liquid fuel operated at less than 57% capacity utilisation during the period.

“Higher capacity utilisation by power plants led to increase in coal consumption for which generation companies had not made prior arrangements and this led to sharp decline in coal stocks at a large number of power plants in India between May and June 2014,” a Coal India Limited (CIL) official said.

The highest capacity utilisation of 99.56% was at Talcher TPS among coal-based plants and 56.74% at Faridabad among gas or liquid fuel-based plants, the data revealed.

The following table provides detailed capacity utilisation at various NTPC plants (coal based and combined cycle gas/liquid fuel based) between April and June 2014:
