McKinley Hopes Coal Ash Legislation Will Pass In 2015
21 Apr 2015
Representative David McKinley is hopeful that the third time will be the charm for a bill he's written to help regulate the recycling of coal ash.
The House Energy and Commerce Committee approved the bill in hopes that it could preserve 316,000 jobs that are dependent on coal ash. Coal ash is a byproduct of the mining industry, and some of it can actually be re-used (like in dry wall). The bill has died in the Senate twice before, but this will be the first time it's been heard in front of a Republican controlled Senate.
"It ensures that the states have the flexibility to make their coal ash program work and are able to complete it within a reasonable time frame," said Republican Representative David McKinley (WV-1) to the House Energy and Commerce Committee.
The bill's goal would be to clarify implementation policies so that state's could make their own decision on how best to recycle the coal ash.
