November 27: A mild firmness was witnessed in select varieties of coal in select markets even as enquiries continued to remain on the lower side, industry sources said.
While South African standard coal prices eased by $0.70 per ton, the off-spec material gained $0.25 along with the Australian standard and Indonesian higher grade materials, they said.
"A few enquiries from cement companies in India have started coming in but the overall volumes are not that high," they said.
However, there is likely to be some impact on international coal prices as India's NTPC and Coal India Ltd have floated enquiries to procure a total of around 24 million tons (mt) of coal in recent times.
While NTPC has floated one short tender of 7.25 mt, the company has floated another enquiry to procure 10-12 mt of coal over a long-term period. Similarly, Coal India's enquiry is for 5 mt (+/-30%).
