Mineral production increases 3% in September y-o-y

 November 18: The index of mineral production mining and quarrying sector stood at 118.8 in September 2015, up 3% compared to 15.23 in September last year.

 The cumulative growth for the first six months (April-September) of 2015-16 edged up by 1.5% compared to the corresponding period of previous year.

The total value of domestic mineral production (excluding atomic and minor minerals) during September 2015 was Rs 17,496 crore. The contribution of coal was the highest at Rs. 6,427 crore (37%). Contribution of petroleum (crude) was Rs 5,529 crore, natural gas (utilized) was Rs 2,190 crore, iron ore was Rs 1,646 crore, limestone Rs 474 crore and lignite Rs 433 crore. These six minerals together contributed about 95% of the total value of mineral production in September 2015.

Production level of important minerals in September 2015 were coal at 449 lakh tons, lignite 32 lakh tons, natural gas (utilized) 2,648 million cu. m., petroleum (crude) 30 lakh tons, bauxite 2,300 thousand tons, chromite 131 thousand tons, copper conc. 9 thousand tons, gold 103 kg., iron ore 108 lakh tons, lead conc. 23 thousand tons, manganese ore 152 thousand tons, zinc conc. 137 thousand tons, apatite & phosphorite 212 thousand tons, limestone 232 lakh tons, magnetite 22 thousand tons and diamond 3,010 carat.

The production of important minerals showing positive growth during September 2015 over September 2014 include ‘apatite & phosphorite’ (432.1%), ‘chromite’ (72.4%), ‘lead conc. (50.1%), ‘bauxite’ (49.5%), ‘iron ore’ (32.6%), ‘diamond’ (22.1%), ‘copper conc.’ (12.2%), ‘lignite’ (10.0%), ‘zinc conc.’(4.8%), ‘coal’ (2.2%), ‘limestone’ (1.0%), and ‘natural gas (utilized)’ (0.4%). The production of other important minerals showing negative growth are: ‘petroleum (crude)’ [(-) 0.1%)], ‘gold’ [(-) 4.6%)], ‘manganese ore’ [(-) 10.8%] and ‘magnesite’ [(-) 24.4%].
