October 27: A holiday mood prevailed in international coal markets on October 24 and, except for Australian and South African standard varieties, coal prices across categories remained soft on lack of bids, market sources said.
Indian buyers practically remained out of the market due to the Diwali holidays, while Chinese interest continued to remain low, leading to a weak trend in prices, they added.
The sentiment was further affected by lack of clarity on reports about China’s willingness to drop its proposal to impose the 6% tax on coal imports even as their domestic coal prices firmed up a bit because of that.
