March 12: Mixed trends were visible in the spot international coal market with prices in South Africa inching up a bit while those in Australia softening further, industry sources said.
The softness in Australian prices was aided by the apprehension of a slowdown in the Chinese economy that could negatively impact its steel and power sectors and consequently lead to low coal demand, they said.
Indicating the sentiments, coking coal prices continued to decline even as some miners were believed to be selling their material at losses.
South African coal prices, however, found support at lower levels and hardened by $0.40 per ton, sources said.
